Weird message from the CEO of e-bay, anyone else heard of this?

Quote:
As you know, I almost never reach out to you personally with a request to get involved in a debate in the U.S. Congress. However, today I feel I must.

Right now, the telephone and cable companies in control of Internet access are trying to use their enormous political muscle to dramatically change the Internet. It might be hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are seriously debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future.

Join me by clicking here -- http://www.ebaymainstreet.com/netneutrality -- to send a message to your representatives in Congress.

The phone and cable companies now control more than 95% of all Internet access. These large corporations are spending millions of dollars to promote legislation that would allow them to divide the Internet into a two-tiered system.

The top tier would be a "Pay-to-Play" high-speed toll-road restricted to only the largest companies that can afford to pay high fees for preferential access to the Net.

The bottom tier -- the slow lane -- would be what is left for everyone else. If the fast lane is the information "super-highway," the slow lane will operate more like a dirt road.

Today's Internet is an incredible open marketplace for goods, services, information and ideas. We can't give that up. A two-lane system will restrict innovation because start-ups and small companies -- the companies that can't afford the high fees -- will be unable to succeed, and we'll lose out on the jobs, creativity and inspiration that come with them.

The power belongs with Internet users, not the big phone and cable companies. Let's use that power to send as many messages as possible to our elected officials in Washington. Please join me by clicking here right now to send a message to your representatives in Congress before it is too late. You can make the difference.

Thank you for reading this note. I hope you'll make your voice heard today.

Sincerely,

Meg Whitman
President and CEO
eBay Inc.

P.S. If you have any questions about this issue, please contact us at government_relations@ebay.com.

btw I don't really get any spam e-mail from random companies, in retrospect this might have been spam, seeing as it's not an e-bay subdomain

Still it has a point, we had better watch this issue closely.

I think it is a fake e-mail generated so people go and give them legitimate ebay id's then they turn around and try to crack the high profile id's. either that or generate a false story to get a lot of hits on their site so they can market things/make money.

I highly doubt this e-mail is real now that I think about it. the story has to be false or I bet we would have heard of it from other sources. the only thing that surprises me is that I have not gotten random e-bay emails before, except for the actual e-bay newsletter.

I mean if you see this somewhere else from a credible source let everyone know, I doubt the story is real though.

That is correct. That issue was being debated this week on the Senate floor.

Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) perhaps you may have heard him talking about the internet

"I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes.

We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discrimnate against those people [¿]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [¿]

They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.

It's a series of tubes.

And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that?

Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people."

Basically the same jackasses that were talking about BF2 and the special Al Queida patch that let you play as the Insurgents Rolling Eyes who couldn't find their ass with both hands and a map are trying to push this through. This issue was deadlocked 11-11 in the Senate Commerce Committee. Now this asshole is trying to get a cloture vote on it, which is basically waiting until the guys who voted against it go home and then pushing it through with another vote.

No shit it's a real issue, I think the eMail is totally fake though. Sounds like a phishing scam.

Do you see any mention of this on the EBAY homepage????

I got that email also. I would guess it to probably be legit, considering that the email had my Ebay ID in the subject line, and both my ID and real name in the body of the message at the top. Also, the links went directly to Ebay sites.

I think it's unlikely that anyone would know my Ebay ID (and real name together), especially since I have only used it for Half.com a couple of times.

Either way, the US Congress is pretty stupid sometimes.
