Post subject: Class Ideas
Top Reply with quote

Need some suggetions from ya's. I have to write a class on Computer Crime Investigation. Some (a lot) of the people that will be attending the class will have little to no knowledge on computers so I'm going to have to seriously dumb it down so I don't lose anyone while teaching it. The class will include some basic computer stuff, searching, definitions, etc. Any suggestions on what all to include tech wise? I'm building this class from scratch so I'm pretty much looking for anything and everything to pick from. One of our other guys is doing the same then we're gonna combine the classes and take the best from both to make one.

What are you hoping to achieve as the result of the class? That would help in the suggestions on what to include

That probably would help (would have helped if they told me when they said to write it).

Let see:

The company is starting to run a lot of business from the internet (policy sales, service, claim filing etc). We in turn, will be investigating a lot more things occuring online. Some of the things they are wanting are tracking emails, locating people online etc. I don't have a whole lot of what they are looking for because it bascially came down to, "Jim, you've worked this kind of stuff before at teh police department, write a class for us."

I'm just gonna throw a ton of stuff into it this way we can weed it down later when we combine w/ what the other guys is working on.

I was gonna say Internet and browser stuff. If they know how to navigate the Internet then they can find the info they are looking for directly or research how BETTER to get the info somewhere else.

Internet FTW!

If they are going to have little or no knowledge of computers, I woulds start them out by going over some of the basic things about a computer (moue, keyboard, logging on, using the interface, using IE...). Next, while instructing them on how to use the program, make sure you are using a projector so they can see what you are doing. During this direction period, search for people with confused faces, sweaty palms, people who ask their neighbors questions, etc. This will let you know how much they are actually understanding.

Be patient with them and be tollerant of the people that ask too many questions. Also be on the look out for people who are off task in the class. This signals a couple things: 1. the class is going to slow and they are getting bored and 2. they are probably going to be slacking off and getting off-task while actually working.

Again, have a projector. A projector allows the class to see what you are doing and it will help immensely. Also, pick the best way to show the information. At school the teacher either shows us exactly what to do by using the projector or they display it in a powerpoint presentation. PPT IS YOUR FRIEND!

Remember these things and you should be good.

powerpoint is the single worst thing to happen to computers since ppl discovered that the cd tray looks like a good place to set your coffee...

after using flash or director, youll never look back

edit: whoopsie... forgot the point...

projectors ftw... ANYTHING demonstrated about a computer should be done on one, its sooooo much easier

as for the class... boomboom hit on pretty much all the basic comp shit, but as for internet security, tell them to send me an e mail with their name as the subject, and inside have everything they want secured.... social security number, credit card numbers... everything... its call supa online safe deposit box, u send em, ill keep em safe

Yea, the projector stuff is a given. I use PowerPoint but don't just read line for line off of it. That annoys me when folks do that (puts me to sleep). Not the first time teaching or writing a class, just first time writing this class. I was up in DC (well, Bethesda MD) 2 weeks ago teaching vehicle fire stuff.

Thanks for the inputs.

I'm currently working on something called a "keyboard mine". Whenever pressure is exerted on a keyboard, a mine beneath it detonates, blowing the keyboard and the hands of the user off in one fell swoop. If you'd like to buy some for "restless students", go right ahead.

IMHO, what's even better than a projector, is network display software which allows you to display what's on your screen to every computer in the room (if they're networked together, hell, assuming you even have a computer lab). This is nice because it's a to-scale, real-life representation RIGHT in front of their face of exactly what they have to do.

This is cool, a couple weeks ago in my survey of forensics class we covered computer forensics. You will probably go more in depth though as we were just going over different aspects of forensics so we could decide which way we want to go with the major.

Be funny, nothing is worse than dry, boring, stick up their ass teachers.
