ok the way this topic works is you have to name a part of a pirate age sailing ship (from around the time of 16 and 1700's) but you not only have to name the part, but you have to explain what it does (or is) and where it is in relation to the ship. just to make it easy, the ship will be a 54 gun British MAN O WAR. (rated in the number of heavy guns on each side of the ship (so this ship would have at least had 108 heavy guns in total))

oh and by the way, I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THE WORDS CROWS NEST IN THIS THRED. that is not want it was called in that time. only latter in the late 1800's and early 1900's on CIVILION ships was that space known as a crows nest. (often because poor upkeep on civilian ships lead the birds making there nests there.

i hope we can keep this thread going for quit a wile, as there are thousands of parts to a ship.

i will start it off. EX

the formast = the vertical mast at the front of the ship. its purpose was to hold the yardarms that in turn hold up the sails.

oh btw, you can use a ship part that was used in some one elses post if it was not the main part that they where posting about. but you have to be specific, if you chose, for example a yardarm, then you will have to specify what yardarm it is.

i hope all you history loving pirates enjoy this Very Happy

a ship was rated after the number of heavy guns in total. not on each side. the ship would be a 108 ship of the line, not a 54.

the captain's quarter-gallery would be an integral part of the ship: it allowed the captain to shit.

actually a ship of the line is one that could take her place in the line of battle and would be rated from 1st to 4th depending on how many guns aboard a 1st rate would have 100 guns 2nd 90 3rd 80-70 4th 64-50

my part of the ship - gunwale = the upper planking on the ships sides

ok for my next ship part, the Orlop deck = the deck below the lower gun deck and above the hold. it was used for storage and is also the deck that the magazine was on.

there were lots of 1st rates with more than 100 guns.

next part is the heads. it was on the beakhead. it was an integral part of the ship as it allowed all the sailors to shit

errr actually, the head was usually at the bow....... the head got its name from being at the head of the ship........and its close proximity to the figurehead. i would not want to have to use it in heavy seas though Confused

good post though. keep them coming

the Lubber's hole = a hole cut into the fighting top to make an easier passage to the rigging for the less confident sailors.
