If it is infinitely repeating 9's then it AINT a 1 with infinitely repeating zeroes. Right? Who pushed it over that hump if they didn't round off at some point? If we are talking about rounding off then then fine - I be 1 person tall. j/k Very Happy

Calculus is based on this premise as a way of overcoming a weakness in pre-calculus mathemematics. At some point you cant measure if it is 0.999999... or 1... If you slice so thin that nobody cares, then nobody cares. WOW! Laughing The agreement then is that if nobody cares about what they cannot perceive or define then there is tremendous value to be gained by using calculus. Calculus is way better than anything else we got in the mathematical language toolbox for measuring many things. But if you insist that 'not 1' = 1 then that negligible value is the proverbial "baby tossed with the bathwater".

I am not arguing the foundations or usefulness of modern mathematics, just that infinitely repeating 9's isnt a number used outside theory or the classroom. I have never seen a design spec with infinitely repeating digits.. You can't put 0.999999... in for a 0/1 computer argument either...

If you mean 1 then say one, if you mean infinitely close to 1 but not 1 then say that. If you mean that at some point nobody cares then totally I agree. Very Happy

4.999... pages

jeez... Rolling Eyes

Edit: for the record nobody got pwned unless we want to add Archimedes, Newton, etc. to the list. IMO, it all goes back to how many sqares does it take to define the area of a circle (also IMO do you go nearest fit on high side or low side? Average??? its all the same at some point - that is what Sully was representing). I am actually well aware of the concept Sully has offered up as well as its scholastic merit - and I do agree with the importance of accepting that in order to build on and move on to better stuff.... I was merely playing the role of devil's advocate. I assumed the point of the thread was to have a discussion (not lookee ere, I r smart cuz I quoted sumfin smart) and I accepted the challenge. There are multiple ways to evaluate this concept, perspectives without right or wrong. The = sign is a symbol, a 'manufactured' item. It can represent whatever we want it to be, rigid or fuzzy, tangible or conceptual. Math is no different from any other language... The sky is blue no?

Hey! This thread was about starting a pointless arguments, not about looking smart. I'm perfectly capable of looking smart on my own!

I'll bet Sully will figure that it actually does.

Bah I missed this discussion.

1) I am a pretty smart guy, credentails can be listed, but I won't out of modesty Very Happy

2) None of this discussion matters because we, as in humanity, created mathematics, and as such it is inherently flawed. Theories and calculus might be inmportant in some aspects, but in others they mean absolutely nothing(for the record I have already taken college calculus, though all this mumbo jumbo wasn't included). .9999~ might or might not equal 1, we could find in the future that all these theories are complete bullshit, for that is the way of theories.

Definition: [n] a theory that explains scientific observations; "scientific theories must be falsifiable"

So if we ponder if 1=.999~, we must also ponder if mathematics is foolproof, or if we really exist. I tell you it is much better to ponder these mysteries over mind altering substances than at the computer screen.
I propose that since mathematics are man devised that you could all be wrong and not know it.

And will it matter if I stick .999~ of a falc up a fellows ass and fire, or if I stick 1 falc up the ass and fire?

Bah sometimes I wonder about this group I do.

Oh lovely poem in your sig too Rally, really haertfelt.

All I can say is - theory of multiple intelligences definately shows here. Most of the people that have posted here in this very thread are unusually intelligent. However, not all of us can concur on the mathematical principles behind. Frankly, most of the people really don't give a shit, and I don't fucking blame them!
