Design suggestions?

As of right now, it can boot. And display text. And make the 1st character one screen change a lot. And make that character change color every second.

GUI or GUIless?

Gah you got me at the wrong time. I thought I had a list for my dream OS stuff.

Anyway, include something like GMAILS label system. Esentially, store "files" or whatnot in "folders", but have it so you can have one file in more than one "folder", just like google's labelling. You probably know more about this theory than I do, but i like it a lot.

that wouldn't make it a new OS, that would make it a linux distribution.

<note to self: start a new thread soon about how linux is the new fad>.

AHA this is it: http://www.forbes.com/intelligentinfrastructure/2005/06/16/linux-bsd-unix-cz_dl_0616theo.html

interesting hilights:

Quote:

There's also a difference in motivation. "Linux people do what they do because they hate Microsoft. We do what we do because we love Unix," De Raadt says. The irony, however, is that while noisy Linux fanatics make a great deal out of their hatred for Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), De Raadt says their beloved program is starting to look a lot like what Microsoft puts out. "They have the same rapid development cycle, which leads to crap," he says.

De Raadt says BSD could have become the world's most popular open source operating system, except that a lawsuit over BSD scared away developers, who went off to work on Linux and stayed there even after BSD was deemed legal. "It's really very sad," he says. "It is taking a long time for the Linux code base to get where BSD was ten years ago."

That was on /. wasn't it? The follow up posts on that were HILARIO. Fo rizzle.

I think the whole article was really a joke though. No more of this hijacking hijinx.

heh i think i'm also one of the kiddies who gets open source software just because it's open source and not made by micrsoft (open office, alternatives to microsoft's programming IDEs, etc)... i do like open office more than ms office though

Mostly doing it for fun. I haven't really thought through the design yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be a monolithic kernel (as opposed to a microkernel (because I'm lazy)).

Right now it can tell when you hit a key and read the scancode from the keyboard, but not translate it into a letter. I think the next thing I'll do is the keyboard handling code.
