LONDON (Reuters) - The brains of players of violent video games react as if the violence were real, a study has suggested.

Klaus Mathiak at the University of Aachen in Germany studied the brain patterns of 13 men aged 18 to 26 who, on average, played video games for two hours a day.

Wired up to a scanner, they were asked to play a game involving navigating through a complicated bunker, killing attackers and rescuing hostages.

Mathiak found that as violence became imminent, the cognitive parts of the brain became active and that during a fight, emotional parts of the brain were shut down.

The pattern was the same as that seen in subjects who have had brain scans during other simulated violent situations.

It suggests that video games are a "training for the brain to react with this pattern," Mathiak says.

The research was presented at a meeting in Canada and reported by New Scientist magazine.

Whether violent videos make people more aggressive though is hard to prove, the magazine noted. Studies have suggested players of violent games are in fact more aggressive but have left open the question of whether the games made them that way.

So what if it makes us think violent? So what if I'm on a fragfest and pwn people absentmindedly? How the fuck is this a stunning revelation???

If I had emotions every time I blew Brutus' head off, then I'd stop and go, "Wow, that was really rude of me! Look at this bloody mess! I've got Brutus-Brain all over my new tank top! I'm so sorry Brutus, I didn't mean to kill you in suh a harsh manner!", but I don't, and it doesn't mean two shits.

Sounds like Amish activity to me.

Ok, here's what we is gonna do. First, we start putting mineature bombs into pitchforks and other antique farming equipment and plastic explosives under their buggies. We wait until another study on this subject is releases, give the detonators to Al-Qaeda and let the situation resolve itself Twisted Evil

heh, I read this just five minutes ago. I don't see a problem in this, in a game you are concentrated to find cover, aim and survive, just as in a game. Not really surprising that we utilize same parts of the brain. And hell if I don't use my emotions when playing, I scream at the comp whenever I screw up Very Happy

The only problems are soccer moms who will use this as an argument against violent games
