I was doing a bit o'research on PC gaming vs. console gaming after Casey showed me an article on piracy. Long story short, I claimed that the XBOX was basically a modified/restricted PC without a keyboard and mouse, and probably made use of DirectX since DirectX basically made gaming possible on PCs. I visited our trusty scholarly source, Wikipedia, and to my delight I found out I was more than correct:

"In a console-specific version, DirectX was used as a basis for Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360 console API. The API was developed jointly between Microsoft and Nvidia, who developed the custom graphics hardware used by the original Xbox. The Xbox API is similar to DirectX version 8.1, but is non-updateable like other console technologies. The Xbox was code named DirectXbox, but this was shortened to Xbox for its commercial name."

So, basically, what we have here is the gaming market eating up a "DirectX-box". I found this funny and Casey and I thought you guys would, too. Intelligent move by Microsoft - why would they neglect to use a perfectly good gaming foundation? Razz

Haha, that's bloody fucking brilliant. DirectX-box ---> Xbox hahaha.

Now, does this imply that x/360 should be playable on PC somehow?

Not really. But it does imply that ports are easier to make than ever before. Ok, maybe not because everything used to be so simple. But porting from 360 to PC or vice versa is easier than with any other current (or last gen) systems.

They also did a horrible job porting Bully. But I can't believe I wasted money on GTA4. Rockstar should do like Capcom and have PC as their primary developing platform. It's easier to port from PC to 360 and PS3 than from 360 to PS3 or vice versa.

The problem is that they can make so much more money by developing for consoles in comparison. I don't really know the intricacies of programming.

I think Rockstar did well economically. In the PR department, they completely flipped off their PC gamer market base.

I meant that they could develop for PC and then port it over to consoles as it's easier that way. Or that's at least what Capcom says.
