I have been holding off on this review, because I honestly did not want to write it.

Death of the Family started very strong, we see Joker come back and murder multiple policemen without being seen, recreate his first crime and make Batman powerless to stop it, and then kidnap Alfred Pennyworth and there was nothing that anyone in the Bat-family could do. I was excited for the Joker, and I was excited for Batman. That excitement only grew as a read more of the story. We got to see not only Bruce's side of it but also what Joker's string pulling, him busting everyone out of Arkham and setting up one hell of a final confrontation. The story telling and the art was beautiful, and we even get to see Batman punch a horse. That is right, the Dark Knight went and punched a horse in the face.

There was even the recurring theme of Bruce leaving everyone behind so that he could confront the Joker one on one. In trying to protect the Bat-family, Bruce was instead alienating them which all lead to their eventual capture at the hands of the Joker.

The Joker on the other hand, was big. He comes back and villains fall in line with him, because they all want to be part of whatever is going on. They all realize that the Joker is playing for keeps. The most chilling part for me, was when The Joker not only has the gall to call Two-Face a joke to his face, but also hands him a gun and puts his head against it while doing so, taunting him before dismissing him and walking away for the final confrontation.

For the past month, I knew that someone was going to die. Jason Todd? Barbara? Dick? Tim? Alfred? I had no idea, so my excitement for issue 17 was monumental. Instead, I read a Batman and Robin which had nothing to do with the most recent arc, and a Batgirl that was already at the beginnings of a new arc. I was greatly confused, as I headed into Batman issue 17.

I can only describe the ending in one word: Disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the story is good, the art is good, just not great. The build up to it was great, and one of the best I have read. Going in I was expecting a mind-blowing and terrifying ending. What I got instead felt like a cop-out, I felt that DC stepped in and had them re-write the ending from what it was originally going to be. While there is some initial panic on the reader, the whole thing ends up being one terrible joke. While that is the joker's motive, I honestly expected a more from this new pathological killer Joker. In the end I give it a 4.5/5: a good read and I recommend reading it for the build up, but the ending leaves much to be desired.

Story: 4/5
Art: 5/5

The name of this arc is clearly an homage to the legendary story arc A Death in the Family. In spite of its publication in the 1980s, its ripples still affect the book and its properties, including last year's movie The Dark Knight Rises. To chase after something like that is a dangerous business and I doubt Death of the Family could ever have filled those shoes properly. To see that classic villains are still getting great time in the limelight is encouraging, though. That's the very thing that's kept Batman going for over seventy years and comic fans know it.

The big issue there is that Death in the Family was DC's response to the hatred of Jason Todd, so they could get away with killing him. Here however, no matter what people are going to be angry:

Bruce: Just came back from the "dead"

Barbara: Popular comic and just got the use of her legs back

Damian: People hate him, but seeing two robins die to the joker would be a cop-out and they are trying to have him be a legitimate son to Bruce.

Dick: Most popular Robin, most popular Batman, freaking nightwing, and an overall badass. way too popular and would screw over Nightwing comic fans.

Jason: Don't bathe in the same stream twice.

Tim: Leader of the Teen Titans, would kind of screw over that comic.

Alfred: Makes sense, but too much fan backlash. They could cripple him but that would lead to him being an Oracle 2.0

I honestly think they were going to kill off Alfred and have Batman beat the Joker to near death but DC came in and stopped that ending.
