Quote:
Beware the Court of Owls,
that watches all the time,
ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch,
behind granite and lime.
They watch you at your hearth,
they watch you in your bed,
speak not a whispered word of them,
or they'll send The Talon for your head.

The Court of Owls is the first solo Batman adventure in the new 52, and much has changed. Dick Grayson gave up the cowl and returned to his role as Nightwind, Bruce Wayne announced a partnership with Batman called Batman, INC, and Damian Wayne keeps his role as the new Robin.

When Bruce Wayne announces a new project to help Gotham out, the very same night Batman finds an unidentified man crucified with hundreds of daggers and one message: Bruce Wayne will die tomorrow.

As was told, the new day Bruce Wayne finds himself face to face with an assassin named The Talon, and he carries one message: Bruce Wayne the Court of Owl's has sentenced you to Die. All though Bruce manages to survive this attack, his attacked appears not to. His body was never delivered to the morgue.

The Court of Owls sends Batman on a path to not only revisit the death of his parents, but also on a conspiracy that goes back to founding of Gotham itself, a conspiracy that has the Wayne family in the center of it all.

I would not count this Story Arc as one of the great Batman stories ever told, but it isn't the worst. While it is a very strong start for the new 52 and gives us a glimpse into Gotham's past, other story-arcs such as Hush, and The Long Halloween are much stronger. Instead the Court of Owls is a long-set up for the current Death of The Family arc, as it's whole purpose was to weaken Batman.

The storytelling and art of the comic is borderline fantastic, when a drugged Batman encounters the lair of the Owls the reader is treated to not only visions of what our caped crusader sees, but also as his mind descends into madness so does the comic. Up is down, down is up, and sometimes a man is an owl.

The final few comics in the arc show the Bat-family against the Court of Owls with a final confrontation between Batman and the leader of the Owls. Which was not that impressive to say the least, and the plot-twist was pulled out of nowhere.

So, should you go and get Court of Owls? That depends, are you itching for a Batman story and have already read the greats? Then yeah you should. If you are not however, at least go out and get the first issue.
