Post subject: PSA: Server issues.
Top Reply with quote

Yesterday we had a hiccup with our servers where the new TF2 update, killed our sourcemod. The issue was brought up to me during prime time, and thankfully USAF and I managed to figure everything out and set it right. Now the issue was that this involved multiple server restarts and a few people were angry with me. Sadly that is a requirement because more often than not we go in and poke stuff hoping it works(well atleast I do).

So if we ever have another issue, I ask all of you for a few things:
1. Give me as much information as possible.
2. Stay on the server, I may ask you to test stuff.
3. Be really patient as this will not get fixed right away and requires a bit of guess and check for me.
4. Please, do not get mad at me for restarting the server while at the same time complaining about the issue. I and anyone else working with me are taking time out of our day to help you and make sure you have a good time. Also we control the ban list Razz.

Thank you, this has been a PSA from your friendly neighborhood Admin.

People who complain at maintenance need to shut up or do it themselves. Been my opinion since I could have opinions

Well somtimes the people running Maintenance are rather incompetant. Though that's not the case here as CT is just amazing like that. I wont be on to help test or anything like that but hopefully things go well.

Edit: Actually I will be on for a bit, yay~

You can install a Source server locally. It sounds like the issue was between the TF2 update and Sourcemod so you could probably debug it locally to figure out which script is hiccuping and then once you figure out the issue, make the change on the production server.

Now, I'm not complaining about the process. It's just a TF2 server, the downtime isn't the end of the world. Just saying, if there was such an outcry from the community that you felt you needed to appease the masses with this post then maybe it's something to consider down the road.

Mmhmm.. I'm pretty sure we all have other servers then our Egypt that we visit regularly.. One of mine would be a 24/7 KOTH server

Well the problem was that the new patch turned off sourcemod, completely. This meant that we had no:
admins
!sausage
!admins
specific respawn times

In order to fix it I had to update sourcemod and restart the server. Usually I would wait for a server restart, but here I was getting complaints about the respawn times, and then complaints about the restarts. I did go and implement the change on our second server first, which worked out well. The point is we have a process, and people can yell and bitch at me for taking my time so they have fun or they can be patient and help me so we can all be over the hump together. Most choose the bitch and moan.
