Try this at home!

Had my earbuds in last night and socks on, carpet on the floor. slid a foot back and pow - a static shock inside my fucking ear. hurt like hell for a split second but was more startling than anything. was able to repeat which was rather dumb, give it a shot!

What style of earbuds do you have? Are they like the iPod type or are they the style that have those rubber sleeve pieces on the ends? I imagine the first

actually the ones with the rubber - ear candy - which surprised me once i realized what happened. it would seem kinda far for a spark ~1/4" i'd guess

but static sparks can be pretty powerful - as a kid we used to wear socks on a trampoline and zap the fuck out of each other. One notable zap was from my index finger to my friend's forehead - there was about a 1" blue spark that left a black mark on his forehead and hurt like hell - as a kid was like Start Wars VI emperor power with that one... haha

zaps to the ear are the most painful tho

Interesting, I have headphones just like those and am constantly going around my house with socks on and such on carpeting, but have never been shocked like you experienced. The air in our house is really dry too.

I get shocked all the time when I go to flip a light switch, but never from my headphones.
