Keep getting an error on my laptop (Dell Inspiron) saying one of the USB devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognize it. Thing is, I don't have any USB plugged in. Tried a restore to a couple days ago when the issue wasn't there and it still comes up. I can plug my phone, mouse etc into the USB and they power up, but don't get recognized (phone charges but doesn't launch itunes, mouse IR lights up, but mouse doesn't work) etc etc.

It says the location of the unknown device is in the USB Root Hub (6 ports).

Any idea how to clear this thing out or fix it?

go to Dell support site, use your service tag info, and download the latest chipset drivers and install. that might help if it's not a USB controller problem

Updated chipset and flashed the bios, still happening. In device manager everything shows as ok and up to date/operating normally but the error still pops and still having the same trouble.

Posted in the Dell Support forums and so far the only response is from someone having the same trouble as I am.

Haven't tried. What's weird is if I plug chords into the USB, not w/ anything attached, but just plug them in, the error stops. It's like they don't like being empty but don't want to fully work either.

Still getting "dell'd". Someone on their forums suggested deleting the usb root hubs, did it, now joy. I believe I've isolated it to be coming from USB2 Enhanced Host Controller -293A. When I disable that one, the error stops (however the plug in's still don't recognize anything). I've even deleted that host controller and rebooted, however, as soon as it reinstalls the error comes right back.

I would pick up a USB PCI card and stick it in a slot. Go into Bios and disable your on board USB - they are <$20 at places like Fry's electronics
