Post subject: CPU fan
Top Reply with quote

So the other day my CPU fan started sounding louder than normal, it sounded like a fan going full blast instead of a gentle hum. I found out a lot of dirt and dust has built up underneath the fan blade. Right now I'm thinking of going out and buying a pressurized air thing to try and clean it out. The fan sounded strained and there was a slight scraping sound when the fan was stopping, it also didn't slow down then stop it just suddenly stopped.

At this point I'm debating on whether I should clean out the fan and chance it, if if fails I'll buy a new fan, or I can just skip right to buying a new CPU fan. The one I'm currently using is the fan that came with the CPU I had bought (which was slightly over two years ago).

So should I buy a new CPU fan or put if off and use it as a last resort?

As a side note I won't be around for a bit, the computer still runs fine but I don't want to run it for a bit only to have the fan stop without warning. I'll be checking up on the forums with my 3DS every now and then but I won't be on Steam. Thanks in advance for the help Very Happy

Compressed air works wonders, but even so there's nothing wrong with replacing a stock CPU fan. If you have the spare change I say go for it, it can only help to better your performance

So according to my uncle the ball bearings may have worn down, so I went out and got a new (better) CPU fan (and a case fan to fill in the open slot I have. No such thing as too cool air, right?) Should be back Saturday evening or Sunday!

I had something similar happen to my first PC. I ignored it until I found that my graphics card was smoking... Then Bf1942 came out so I needed a new computer anyway. Thank god. In other words, if your fan is making weird noises, REPLACE IT.

I always use my laptop now and when I run my bootcamp in windows, my fan is constantly on cause it runs so hot. I'm a little worried that my laptop will overheat someday.

I put in the new fan today (it's a thermaltake). Gonna test it out tomorrow afternoon when there's better light. I'm about 90% certain it'll work fine. If you hear swearing in the distance you'll know the 10% won.
