This week, the new Pope George Senior Bluth Sr, otherwise known as Pope Pope or Pope Francis the First, declared that we are good. No matter what religion, sexual orientation, whatever. If you are a good person and do good things, welcome to Heaven dawg.

Well, fuck. Load off my back. Thanks for letting me know that here in 2013.

Now, I am sure that the Pope had all the best intentions with this, and I am glad someone did it; but, it doesn't sit well with me.

Right now, Christianity is on the decline while Islam grows as the world's biggest religion at the same time, so is Atheism. Which leads me to my question:

Where the fuck was this statement during The Crusades, or during any of the times when Christianity essentially ruled the known world and people were persecuted for their beliefs or ideas because it didn't match the one of the church?

The religion hasn't changed, only the world has. The difference between a statement during a time of decline and a time of power is one comes from desperation and the other from love and kindness. Guess which one this was.

Note: I have no problem with the concept of personal religion, I have a problem with organized religion.

I myself believe in the lawn.

Don't cross the lawn.

Shoes would be nice, but the lawn can only do so much.

Religion as a whole makes very little sense to me, but I find the message "You are going to heaven for being a good person" a lot more sensible than "you are going to heaven for believing in X"

I'm actually reading the Qur'an right now as my next important piece of philosophy and political theory.

It's probably best to let it go. We, as a clan, shun serious political discussion in order to be more inclusive. Adding religion to that is probably a good bet. There's an old saying that I live by:

Are you reading it cover-to-cover, or with some sort of guidance? I've heard it doesn't make too much sense cover-to-cover (at least less than the bible, which is more or less chronological).

Yeah, I'm reading it word for word from start to finish and it's already really hard. This is mostly because it's a pretty dry read, as you might expect, and the Suras are in no particular order. You can buy editions that rearrange them, but I have a traditional printing, albeit with a huge system of notes in the back to keep things straight. To be honest, it doesn't truly matter what order you read them in, from what I can tell. It's the usual "Allah is Wise, Merciful" stuff that you'd expect. Don't worry, you guys won't be getting a review about this one.

Speaker- Hello, newcomers, and welcome. Can everybody hear me? [taps the mic a few times] Hello? Can everybuh-? Okay. [the crowd quiets down] Uh, I'm the hell director. Uh, it looks like we have about 8,615 of you newbies today, and for those of you who are a little confused, uh, you are dead, and this is hell, so, abandon all hope and uh yada yada yada. Uh, we are now going to start the orientation process, which will last about-

Man- Hey, wait a minute, I shouldn't be here. I wa a totally strict and devout Protestant! I thought we went to heaven!

Hell director- Yes, well I'm afraid you were wrong.

Soldier- I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness.

Hell director- Uh, you picked the wrong religion as well.

Another man- Well, who was right? Who gets into heaven?

Hell director- I'm afraid it was the Mormons. Yes, the Mormons were the correct answer.

Crowd- [disappointed] Awww.

I actually disagree with this. Eugene already opened this particular can of worms, if you have a problem with what he is saying I think it is better to let it out. Better to discuss your differences like adults and come to a solution than allow wounds to fester IMO

Baptist here: For all of my life, I gave zero shits about that core belief that sends you heaven.

My reasoning:
There is no reason for anyone that lived a good humble life to be screwed.

But my reasoning is moot: "Judge not, that ye be not judged." So, sit back and puff puff pass.
