Basically, my computer has overheated over time. No sure where, but i'm certain it did. It was in a closet with my rabbit running around. I've kept it maintained, but overheating was unavoidable.

However, I would lean towards the processor as you can hear it working hard. Fans kick up on high.

Anyways, the max I'm wanting to spend is $700 with tax. I'll post my specs later when I can as there's some reusable stuff. But feel free to give out some ideas.

Do you get the computer to boot up at all or just hear fans spin?

1) Stomp the bunny Laughing Laughing
2) Clean out the hair
3) Don't get another rodent

I'd go with something like this:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vKy1

Just a tad over $700

Play around with that site to get to the $ you want.

An Idea so save a little $: If you have no use for the old PC, pull the CD/DVD drive and put in new one. Hard drive too if it's big enough and not too old.

Comp boots up, explore.exe freezes and is unresponsive. No way to pull up the task manager.

Double post, This picker is pretty fucking awesome.

Edit: Specs:

Mobo: XPS 8100
Intel i7 870 @ 2.93 GHZ
8G Ram
ATI Radeon HD 5700

My Ram, power supply, HDs, CD Drives and fans are all reusable. And it's in a nice case, but I'll have to clean it. Laughing

When I was first starting computer Building this website used to be my best friend:

http://www.logicalincrements.com/

now I make it everyone elses best friend.

Its not 100% accurate or the best but it sure is a good go to guide.

Also: I don't recommend reusing power supplies, they do fail eventually and unless you really can't afford it, it'll save you down the road when you're trying to watch porn and your computer turns off.

Buy a good PSU and it will last. I usually go with Corsair and the one I bought in 2008 is still going strong. I doubt it will break any time soon.

Remember Stealth. Buying a cheap computer instead of a good computer if the difference is 200$ and you will most likely regret it at one point. Like the saying goes poor can't buy cheap products. Invest enough money so your computer will last the next gen console ports and PC games this year and it should last a good while for you.

change 'will last' to 'should last' and I agree with the statement. Seen 3-5% of even high quality power supplies fail within 12 months. point is everything has a failure rate. but the difference between a quality power supply and a low end one is huge. the weight difference alone will give you an idea.
