I want to start this review with a dedication. The person I am dedicating it too is 90% of the reason I even picked up this game as they and I would spend a good amount of time talking about it.

GoSS this one is for you buddy.

Bioshock Infinite is set in a separate climate from the first two games. The idea of Andrew Ryan and Rapture is in a whole different world. This game takes place on Colombia a floating city high above the clouds where the ideas of civil rights and white supremacy are alive and kicking. You play Booker DeWitt, a private investigator and war veteran. Unlike the first two games, in this one your player character talks and has their own personality. The interactions you have with the world, its people, and Elizabeth help bring out the personality and history of your character.

The game begins with an homage to Bioshock as your come upon a light house which is actually the way to the city, this time you go up, oh, and find a murdered man on the way. Bioshock Infinite fills the world with non-hostile characters you actually meet and interact with outside of PA systems. This is a huge shift in direction from the empty and haunted feel of Rapture as Colombia is a vibrant and alive city. However for the most part the people are coded to say a few lines, but pay attention to what they say. It really drives the feel of the world as you go from the Utopian white society to the ghettos of the non-white peoples.

In the first few hours you will encounter a black man cleaning the floor talking out loud about his idiot bosses and immediately upon your presence shifts to a more uneducated and stereotypical slur, indicating just how messed up the situation is. As the game progresses it really shows the difference between the Utopian White society that spends their days walking in the park, listening to music, and enjoying a day at the beach; and the hellish non-white society that bids on auctioned off jobs based off who can do it in the least amount of time.

The biggest contrast for me was walking into the bathrooms. The non-white ones are broken down, not really appealing, but serve the purpose; the utopian ones are made of gold and marble with heavy drapes and look as if they belong in a mansion of some sort.

Many of this is heavily indicated by your conversations with Elizabeth as you travel through the world. Elizabeth is the girl you are to escort back to New York so that your debt may be erased, and she is one of the best features in the game. Not only does she have the ability to give you ammo, money, and health in the midst of battles, or even change the course of the battle by pulling in turrets, ammo, health, or robots from another time and place, but the emotional attachment you begin to feel towards her begins to invest more and more of you, the player, into the story. The game isn't so much your journey as it is the journey of you and her. Throughout the game you each find out more about each other, and the journey is one of the most emotional things I have ever experiences in a video game. It was a real pleasure seeing the bond between you and Elizabeth form and get tested as your progress thought the game.

The game play is quite solid and Elizabeth doesn't get in your way at all. At all times you have instant access to 4 gear slots (head, chest, legs, and feet) that modify what you can do or find, two guns, and two different vigors or powers. The powers and gear stay on you and you can modify that at any time, but you are limited to two guns. This allows you to change your playstyle at a moment's notice and get best attuned for a battle. You can also find bottles that upgrade your health, shield, and salt (essentially a mana pool) which are one-use permanent effects. The hacking mini-games are gone, and instead you can have Elizabeth lockpick a door for you assuming you have the appropriate amount of lockpicks.

The combat in the game is familiar to Bioshock veterans but with the addition of sky-lines and warps you can change the course of battles how you want. Sky-lines are rails along the city that allow for travel thought the battlefield and can lead into some very crazy combat.

For me the game really shines due to all of the extra stuff you can uncover, and I am not talking about the hidden items. This game really shines when you pause to take a break and just enjoy the surroundings, listen to the conversations, immerse yourself in the different lifestyles of Colombia and you will not regret it. For me this moment came a bit into the story where I stumbled into a tavern basement and found a guitar, as I commanded Booker to play the guitar I was pleasently suprised that Elizabeth started singing and an even unfolded before my eyes.

It is with a heavy heart that I finish this review as Bioshock Infinite is the best single-player experience I have ever had the pleasure to be part off. This is the only game where I wished I could go back and experience it all with a clean slate knowing nothing of what is to come. I doubt that anything will ever top the nine hours I have put into this game, and so it is with a somewhat heavy heart that I give Bioshock Infinite a 5/5 marking my completion of this game.

Thank you to Irrational Games for creating this masterpiece.

It was a gem. Still wrapping my head around the ending and finding all of the clues in my second play through.
