Many may not know, but there is a movement that is sweeping the world.

During the Oscars, the academy slapped the VFX artists of the world by refusing to allow the appreciation of the work done by Rhythm and Hues who are going bankrupt.

They worked on the blockbuster hit, Life of Pi, which made a fortune. Yet, R&H won't see much of the profit.

But this goes beyond just the mere VFX artist problem. This effects Hollywood, the very center of the entertainment industry. It's only a matter of time before everything starts outsourcing to China. And when that happens, Hollywood will die.

It gets better. The East Asian nations that do the cheap work typically use pirated software because the Chinese government will never punish them as they're a source of revenue. East Asia is far outside of the jurisdiction of US Copyright law, so there's no possibility of stopping this with force. In the end, the US and Canada spend a fortune to develop technology, train people to use it, and develop cutting edge techniques and all the Chinese need to do is visit the Pirate Bay to tear all of that down. I've met other artists from the region and they truly do steal all of the software they use. They have no incentive to do otherwise. This has been damaging to the entire industry from the start and now it's finally coming to a head. Soon, movies will share the same fate as music.

I've read some ignorant comments on other websites. Some are claiming that movies don't need "flashy" VFX and should be removed.

However, this is largely due to the fact that most people don't realize how crucial this is. VFX is not just visually seen, like Fire, Storms, and Explosions.

VFX encompasses a long list of things movies need to survive. Here's some: Rotoscoping, Editing, Compositing, Colorizing (This sets the mood), Lighting. And that's only dealing with the computer side!

VFX artists also create live full scale models, animatronics, optical illusions, props, backgrounds, matte painting...

There's so much more to it than just an explosion. Artists work hard to bring their work to life. And if these jobs get outsourced, Hollywood will die. China doesn't have the hardware to produce the quality of movies the US puts out.

It makes me think of that horrible Bollywood movie. I can't remember the name of it, but he's like an android clone type thing.
