I have been thinking about modern games recently, especially with the next gen of consoles around the corner. The thing I realized is that gaming has changed, and they almost have come full circle. Initially there was the arcade and people could watch you play, the guys who set high scores were seen as these awesome gods, then gaming moved to the living room and it was you and maybe a friend form school it turned into a private affair, it was at this point that we began to see games with a multiplayer feature which means LANs and dial-up brought some people back into the fold. As the internet got faster we saw a drop in LAN and a rise in xbox live, PSN, and match-making, which led us to where we are today. Almost every game has multiplayer aspect to it, online gaming is on the rise and game releases are being shown on TV. So this got me thinking, what makes a great game now? In the past you had to do something different and everything right, this was the goldeneyes, the marios, the zeldas, the doom, the blizzard RTS, the Command and Conquers. Now we have people copying the massive success of CoD4 for all your FPS needs, and indie gaming is on the rise. So , I made a top 5 list of what any game main-stream or indie needs in order to be a fun and good game.
5. Graphics that work for the game
Not every game needs to have flashy realistic HD graphics. Games such as Braid or Minecraft have very simple and unimpressive graphics, but they work for the game and add depth and a feel to it. The graphics helps set the tone of the game and over time the players come to appreciate it for what it is. You want your Skyrim to look amazing because it helps you get into the world, and you want your minecraft to be blocky as all-hell because it just works. Often times, the Graphics are what really hurt the game and especially number 4.
4. A good story.
I think we can all agree that Crysis was a graphical masterpiece. It really showed what you can do with an engine and damn, that island looked sexy as fuck. Which is really all that game had going for it. So many games these days suffer from having a terrible story with bland characters, obvious plot twists, and just a generic shitty story. On the other hand we have games like Bioshock which had a memorable story and experience, and even farther away we have a game like Journey which has about a 3 hour life, no dialogue, and has been called by many to be the Game of the Year for 2012 for its story.
3. A game cannot outstay its welcome.
So many games these days feel like a chore playing. I beat Dishonored twice due to it giving me new toys, new ways of achieving my target and it threw new enemies and challenges at me as the game progressed. It ended right on time so I never got bored of it, and it didn't feel like a grind. However games such as Borderlands 2, Kingdoms of Amalur, Mass Effect 3, and so on turned into a massive grind fest for the last 1/3 of the game. I don't even know about Borderlands 2 because I was tired of the grind early on. These games stop throwing new stuff at you and just make annoying enemies or a ton of them so every encounter isn't so much a firefight but an annoying disturbance. I usually find myself turning on god mode and just running through avoiding enemies because I am on hour 7 of fighting generic armored elemental resistance baddy who has one week point from a sniper rifle that I don't have ammo for.
2. If your game has multiplayer, make it fun and unique.
CoD4 worked because it was original, kept everyone interested and had a system where you grow as a player. Now every single multiplayer game copies that exact same thing and does it very poorly. Battlefield 2: Bad Company had your classes grow as you did stuff with them, and I spent HOURS on that game. Crysis 2 was just Cod4 but you can turn invisible, be super fast and take less damage. It didn't have anything to keep you coming back after a few play sessions. If you are going to make your game and it is based off another game already out, put in a new system. LoL put in runes and masteries, Path of Exile put in the gem system to give you spells, hell even torchlight 2 added something as small as a pet and it makes the game feel unique.
1. Fun
For fucks sake, make your game fun. All of it, I don't want to get bored by waves of a stupid enemy, or face a steep learning curve before I get to have any fun what so ever. Just make your game fun from the beginning, it is why I love games such as Bastion, Braid, Torchlight, etc. Those games are just pure fun, I don't loathe certain points where I have to grind to get a gem from a dude on the other side of the map to open a door to a key to unlock the chastity belt of Princess Peach. Which isn't to say that hard isn't fun, (if you know what I mean) games such as Castlevania, and the original Megamans are frustrating and difficult as hell but they are rewarding because when you beat that level you had trouble with you feel good. People play games to have fun, why make it frustrating for them?

P.S. I hope Mario chokes on poison.

I like your points, but one question; that part at the end, were you inferring that the Mario games break rule 5? If anything, I'd say anything 'Mario' in the title is a golden example of succeeding on number 5 above all else.

Agreed. The dynamic lighting in New Super Mario Bros Wii U is amazing. The game is made to look like an updated version of something very old fashioned, but if you pay attention, many modern touches are put in there to really bring it to life.

I think the Mario games are good and there is a reason they have stood the test of time. That being said, I hate Mario, what they have done to him and anything involving Mario going to 3D.
