Let's jumpstart this section with a problem. Overheating graphics card. Please check the work as I go.

Specifically, this one: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series.

(Info based of the Catalyst Control Center) Probably this one:

http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/mobility-radeon-5000/mobility-radeon-5700-5600/Pages/mobility-radeon-5700-5600.aspx#2

It's a PCIE 2.0 x 16 card.

Now, the card appears to be overheating. At the time of it's release, it was a beast of a card. However, it has this shell around it and I feel the fan is not pushing the air through it like it used to. Now, it's almost scrap.

So, I begin to look at other cards. I wanted to see what my mobo could handle.

Here it is: Dell XPS 8100 MotherBoard - *T568R*

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Dell-Studio-XPS-8100-Motherboard-T568R-DH57M01-/150963645697?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2326226d01

Apparently, my model doesn't support PCIE 2.0. It only supports 1.0. So dell gave me a card that my mobo couldn't fully utilize.

So great... I either need to buy a weak card, or upgrade the mobo to use a better card (which I also have to buy).

My processor is still good: Intel i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93 GHz, 2933 mhz.

http://ark.intel.com/products/41315/Intel-Core-i7-870-Processor-8M-Cache-2_93-GHz

Note the socket type: LGA1156

So now it seems that I need to upgrade the mobo, but if I want to use my old processor, I need one with that socket type and then I need it to support a PCIE 2.0 at the minimum so I can then buy a GFX card.

And as of 11:23 right now, I'm tired. If my work checks out, let me know. I believe I'm on track, but may be missing something.

If it is right, it appears these are the only two (But why do I feel wrong?):

Edit: The memory I believe is DDR3 1333 type.

Odd that your specific motherboard does not support PCIE 2.0 when the board you linked does support it. Even odder still is a Intel H57 chip set with only a PCIe 1.0 for the larger slot.

Any PCIE 2.0 card can operate in a PCIE 1.0 slot and there are still plenty of decent cards still available for it.

If the fan is still able to turn, the housing is probably full of dust balls, hair (dont you have cat(s)?) and grime. A good compressor should help you clean it all out.

I realize that a PCIE 2.0 and even a 3.0 can fit in the slot. But I figured if the slot was a 1.0, it wouldn't utilize it's full abilities.

After browsing the mobo link, I don't see where it says it supports 2.0. Am I blind? Haha

I'll need to get the canned air at the store when I go into work today. ( Iz haz rabbit)

Canned air blows (Figuratively and literally)

Got a friend who owns a computer shop and they use a compressor on some of the worst stuff.

Oh, the link itself does not say it (uh...t'was late at night), but the specification of the computer does. I very much doubt that major items like slot speeds will change between the models.

Uh, every manufacturer has multiple revisions even use different brands of components (esp motherboards it seems) in the same model # systems. Dell is probably the worst.

Sadly, I couldn't get a hold of a compressor. But I did get some canned air.

There was a lot of hair in the heatseat of the processor and in the gfx card. Enough to make a small cottonball.

I got it all out of there and already have noticed an improvement. My computer started up wayyy faster than normal. And some of my gfx intensive applications opened much quicker.

There's still an overheating issue, but it's much more manageable than before.
