So I think I mentioned this to a few of you recently, but this friday I'm flying to Doha, the capital of Qatar, for work. There's an annual international film festival there in a few weeks, and the company I work for is providing a lot of the projection and processing gear that the festival will use in most of its venues. We do this job every year, but I opted out of it last year for some personal reasons. I'll be there for just shy of 4 weeks, setting up and working on equipment around the clock, and breaking it down to send home after the festival ends.

The city of Doha is similar to its (somewhat) neighbor Dubai in some regards, and is expanding and trying to become a tourist (and corporate) hub, and this effort is very well funded. It's a very strange place to be, as everything is brand spanking new, but put together rather hastily. Construction is going on nonstop, and the last time I was there, there were more huge cranes in the skyline than actual buildings. As it is, it's been slow for businesses to move there, and the city can feel like a (massive) ghost town at times. They did get the world cup bid (for 2022 I think), which is huge for them.

Unfortunately I'll only have a netbook with me, and I'm sure not how much access to the internet I'll have anyway. I wasn't online much the last time I was there, but that was more because I was working 16 to 18 hours at a time most days haha.

I haven't been too open about personal stuff for a while, but its just about a year exactly since I joined and I'm pretty comfortable talking about this stuff now. Plus, this is kind of a big deal and a pretty unique opportunity. Aaand while I'm at it, my real name's Chapin.

If anyone's interested or wants to know more, I'm happy to answer questions or go into more detail. I'll also be posting pictures occasionally when I can.

Sounds like that will be a pretty awesome business trip, minus the whole working around the clock bit. Should be a great experience Smile Is juicebox going with you? If not that's gonna make for a long four weeks I imagine :/

I got lost in the heat of the moment on that one.

The crazy hours and no weekends bit doesn't bother me that much actually. It's really intense but I produce the best work under pressure and in situations like that, so I don't mind it.
And no, shes not comin with me for this. That, the lack of pork, and the fact that alcohol is crazy expensive make this kind of trip a bit frustrating, but I guess the best environment for staying focused :p

Here's an album for a few trip pictures I took. I only have some for the venues I worked at, we had several more that I only went to a handful of times. I would have liked to get more pictures, but I didn't have much time to stop and snap them most of the time unfortunately.

Setup was for 2 weeks, the festival ran for a week, and we were all packed up 3 days after that. Turnout was good, I believe 6000 passes were sold. Most major houses were filled several times a night, especially on the more popular films.

Working this one was a lot more pleasant that the last time I did it, as we had a few less locations to set up in. A large portion of the days I worked were between 14 and 18 hours, but I don't mind it so much as long as stuff gets done well. I was able to catch up on sleep when the setup was done and the film festival was underway, as we don't have to do much then except go on standby in case there's a problem with the equipment.

Tear out went smoothly, and FedEx handled our freight there and back, which was a dream.
