I have two questions for those computer savvy then I am:

1) What is a reasonable temperature range for an intel i7 930? I've seen a lot of different numbers online.

2) What is the best way to check the core temperature? I have speedfan and core temp installed. Here is what they say when I'm running an old game (shouldn't be too taxing):

It seems reasonable, except that speedfan has TWO CPU temps and one is at 72. What's up with that? That number gets even higher if I do something more taxing, so that's a little disconcerting even if might not be the actual temperature.

Also, is 75 reasonable for a GTX 470 running an old game on a summer day?

I had a BSOD yesterday that MIGHT be because of overheating, so I'm getting a little paranoid.

Speaking strictly SpeedFan:

I've read that the first listed one is broken. As an example, mine says 127C.
Holy. Shit. That would be hot. But I'm not so sure yours is the case.

Mine's separated into the different cores, mine being 4. Interesting yours is not.

Ideally, the colder the better, but I roughly want mine at about 40C(though it averages 55C) and I have about the same processor as you. Mine's an i7 870.

As for CoreTemp:

I've always felt that it was more inaccurate than most and promptly deleted it. I'm not sure about your system, but it would appear to me that it may be better on yours than the SpeedFan as you seem to have reasonable numbers.

I would use Core Temp and keep Speed fan to increase your fan speed when you need it.

Any number that's in 80 or higher is getting pretty hot. I can see 75 causing a crash occasionally when you suddenly open something that causes it to jump temp. Mind you, some cards can run fine at 90C, but still...

Most manufacturers say that physical damage can start occurring on processors running in excess of 90C. Some current motherboards will trigger an emergency shut down if you go above 85 (I've had this happen once, scared the shit out of me). I believe graphics processors have a lower threshold though.

Personally I'm a fan of Realtemp as it has a lot of visual customization, and I prefer how it displays in the notification area.

Thanks for the help so far!

I didn't know about Realtemp. I just tried it out and it basically agrees with Core Temp, so I'm pretty sure that Speedfan is crazy.

I've read that the GTX 470 is built to withstand up to 105 (!), but obviously you don't want it anywhere near that.
