Interestingly, they're mapping four base pairs (A, C, G, and T) to only two symbols (0 and 1). I wonder if that's a limitation of reading the DNA (which has to pair two molecules together), or if they could compress it more by using, say, quaternary with 0/1/2/3.

Aren't most computers based (Way down there) on binary? Maybe it's just an ease of compatibility issue.

Aye, it's because computers use high/low voltages to determine on/off... there's no really practical technological way yet to do more states. IIRC from an (theoretical) efficiency standpoint, ternary is supposed to be the best, and from a coding standpoint, it'd be great to replace boolean true/false with true/false/neutral.

From an information storage standpoint though, you'd really just need something to interface with non-binary storage and translate it to high/low output for the rest of the system.

Would it take much to program the translator? I guess it would still fall under "Ease of use"

Either way, still way fuckin cool.

Hmm... could place the internet on DNA. Then you can actually do +1 internets.

But on a more serious note, DNA would have to be kept in ideal conditions since it's organic.

Would kinda suck having your data get damaged by, say, UV rays. Would be kinda awesome if it started reproducing

Trying to get a living thing out of that sort of dna would be like trying to get a picture by changing ".txt" to ".jpg" Laughing
