Since it looks like we are going to restart the server with the new patch, I have a suggestion for how we can arrange things:

Build a nether portal first thing on the surface. Then we can build a hub in the nether for quick travel in various directions. (8:1 FTW)

Otherwise, whoever builds the first portal near spawn wins the portal race and, if I understand correctly, every other portal near spawn redirects to them on the way back.

A quick travel system is a good idea.

AFAIK, the way the portal linking works isn't first-wins, but nearest-wins. Everytime a player uses a portal it should re-check the 1000 or so blocks (in the destination world) around the exact 1:8 translation sot, find the closest portal, and send you to that one. If there is no existing portal in the radius at the destination, it creates a new one at the nearest "safe" location.

The location is starts the search from is based on the location of the specific portal block you went through (i.e. the purple swirly square) so it's possible to have the left side of a portal link to on destination and the right side link to another, if you build both destination portals in precise locations.

Yes, it is nearest-wins. But AFAIK the position of the new portal in the nether is determined by whichever one is built first. So whoever builds the first portal should at least have an advantage.
