I have a presentation tomorrow at 9am for this semester-long project I have been working on in my System Dynamics class entitled "Understanding Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherer Societies with System Dynamics Modeling." Essentially, we're trying to explain things about the populations of prehistoric humans using math. The project is heavily based on this awesome paper. Cliff notes: these people studied extant hunter-gatherer tribes and have decent data on how much energy they consume and produce by gender and age, as well as mortality and reproduction data, etc. Great stuff. But we use all this data to develop this simple model and then poke at some of their hypothesis. Maybe I'll post the stuff here later.

But I was doing some research for the intro of the presentation and I was going to talk about human history, and here are some sweet graphics I found that might enlighten you:

What do you think about some people saying that there's evidence that humanity started in Africa? A place engulfed by civil war and famine. I always thought humanity started in the middle east.. Hmm..

I think the evidence that humanity started in Africa is pretty credible and, from what I've read, the hypothesis is taken to be true. See:

It's well-accepted that humanity started in Africa. All sorts of evidence points to this.

For instance, here's an interesting bit I read about the other day - Neanderthal DNA makes up 1 to 4% of the DNA of non-African humans. That non-African bit is interesting. It suggests that non-African moved out and mated with Neanderthals, but the ancestors of modern Africans stayed in Africa and kept the bloodlines pure.
