So, let's see if what I was trying to do was even possible.

We were measuring the distance between the columns of a Lowes store. We were essentially mapping out the layout in order for them to locate their various products. For no fucking reason, they wanted to know where the columns were.

So yeah.

We had a 90 degree triangle(or a rectangle) and only one side (the height). There was no possible way to measure the hypotenuse.

Code:

^^ Just wanted to make a pair of columns.

We wanted to know the distance between the poles. But there was too much fucking shit in the way to figure out another side.

I could be wrong, but I *thought* there was a way to figure out a side with only a side and a degree, or at least some clever way to figure it out since it makes a rectangle essentially.

The height was 490 inches.

In short ... no it's not.

Look at it this way:

There are infinitely many right triangles where one of legs (that is, non-hypotenuse sides) is 490 inches. If you had moved the columns an inch closer together, the info you had would not have changed. So your info was not enough to say something meaningful.

Generally speaking, you need three pieces of info to nail down a triangle and you've only got two - an angle and a side length. Aside from measuring another distance, the only other way would be to measure one of the other angles and use right triangle trigonometry.

Then to accurately measure the columns was impossible due to all the shit in the way.

In the end, it turns out the the fucking architect who designed the building didn't make these columns all that evenly spaced either. It'd varied between 440 ft and 490 ft across.

This makes my head hurt almost as much as trying to help my 14 year old w/ his math homework.
