I love the posts from people whining about how they can't do school reports with Wikipedia down. For the record: you aren't supposed to use Wikipedia as a source for reports. That's one of the cardinal rules of research papers unless times have changed that much and our school system truly is that inept now. If that's the case, I weep for the future.

No wonder there are activists trying to get iPads for grade schools to "improve education". I guess a half-assed Google search counts as an education now.

No, you're not supposed to use secondary sources for scholastic papers. Luckily, wikipedia links all of their primary sources for you to scavenge off of and nicely summarizes them for easy replication.

The iPad article says it's for digital textbooks, and new stuff we can't do with normal textbooks, like interactive textbooks... not for Google searches and Wikipedia.

There was a phrase used in the last issue of TIME that really stuck with me. It went something like this.

Kids go to college now to receive a degree, not an education.

You have no idea how true that is. At the end of the day, people don't care about the rules of double bonding carbons, or the proper way to integrate. It's all about passing the class so they have a degree.

Nor do they care about limits or the actual meaning of the derivative.

Unfortunately, the world we live in has created that mentality. The value of the degree far outweighs the learning you get in the classes, especially when you're looking for your first job.

My friends and I had an interesting conversation the other day.

The US has this mentality that unless you graduate college, and have a 9-5 job you are a failure at life. Furthermore they pushed their kids to college because "we didn't have the same opportunities." The result has created more degrees then there are "successful" job. In truth a General Manager at something like Panera Bread makes about 115,000 a year. My Liberal Arts College Chemistry Professor who has tenure makes 100,000 if he works during the summer.

The basic gist of it all is that, most people have a mentality:
1. Get a degree
2. Get a 9-5 job

Not saying if this is right or not, but it was a very interesting conversation none the less.

I had no intention of going to college for an education.

Why? Because our college system is retarded. Throughout the four years I went there, I didn't learn much. The few advanced math related courses yes. My chosen specialization, yes.

History? No. English? No. Debate? No. Theater? No. Etc etc.

I knew most of this before I went there because I actually paid attention in high school. My entire degree was laughable. I have to take algebra again inside of a calculus class just because most students dont know algebra? Why the fuck are they there then?

So fuck the US education. I'm teaching myself.

What I love is the fact that I'm one of the few people taking things like chem for the sake of learning interesting things and I end up understanding stuff that baffles the people who "need" 90s and focus on marks

I hate people that just focus on the grades instead of focusing on why you're actually in school. Learning is good. Learning is beautiful. And if you're not there to learn, then GTFO newb...

I know there are some required classes, but when you're taking a test in a College Credit History class in High School and you hyperventilate because you could POSSIBLY not get that precious A, you need to work on your priorities. LE. MUTHAFUCKIN. SIGH.

I know what that's like, my parents tried that shit on me. Didn't take me long to realize it wasn't worth it though, I'm happier making my own way to a successful life than having them on my back about it.
