Post subject: Ideas for a custom case?

So, I was wondering if anyone in here has ever made a computer with a custom case...

I'm a broke college student, and being a computer science major, I have realized that my tri-boot macbook pro is no longer sufficient for my primary computer system. Thusly, I have decided to purchase one computer part per month, until I have a complete system, that way I can afford an entire machine on my less than half time low paid college job...

So in order to save as much money as possible, i'm thinking about building a case. Obviously, I would like to try legos, but it is incredibly budget prohibitive. Maybe I would make something out of plywood as long as I had plenty of ventilation?

I'm wondering if anyone has experimented with this before, or has successfully created a custom case? Anyone have something that has failed before?

If it weren't for the fact I am so broke I would just buy a cheap one off of newegg, but I am thinking there will be some nerd cred in having a decently powerful machine encased ins something clearly home made.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts,

Save an buy all the parts at once, otherwise you'll have out of date parts, or some parts which may end up costing more than if you bought them all at once. Plus, new incompatible parts may come out.

Definitely wait until you have all the money you need then buy the computer all at once.

Also, why doesn't the MBP work for you anymore?

If you don't at least make it out of Big Lego Blocks, then you are a farce!

This one looks cheap

I made an acrylic case way back - I had access to a router table though so all the cuts, once programmed, were clean and nearly perfect. I think the materials cost around $50 and I had use of the machine for free. I'll try to dig up the pics.

Plywood? WTF? If you finished it and maybe stained it....maybe it'd turn out ok. worth a try

This looks promising, but not plywood:
