Foldit is a game in which players attempt to discover protein structures, contributing to scientific research in protein folding. It uses algorithms to generate structures and tasks players with optimizing them to have the lowest energy -- a task at which humans currently perform better than computer algorithms.

Apparently, it has a team competition mode, which makes use of some players' preference to make larger changes towards the general goal and others' preference to work on the smaller tweaking to further optimize the structures.

There are also global scoreboards, for both teamplay and solo play.

An article about it:

http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/08/gamers-beat-algorithms-for-finding-protein-structures.ars

And the game itself:

We could bring some CT domination to this game and help fuel scientific research in the process!

I DLed it, but I couldn't get through all the tutorials without giving up. The alpha helix rotations are really hard to judge how to get the score high enough.
