For the past three years, I've been playing on a laptop. It's HP, Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz dual core), 4GB of DDR2-667, and nVidia Quadro FX 570M graphics.

I play with the following settings:

Resolution: 1920x1200
Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: Medium
Shader Detail: High
Water Detail: Reflect World
Shadow Detail: High
Color Correction: Enabled
Antialiasing Mode: None
Filtering Mode: Trilinear
Wait for Vertical Sync: Disabled
Motion Blue: Disabled
Field of View: 90
Multicore Rendering: Enabled
High Dynamic Range: Full (if available)

This usually gets me in the range of 25-35 fps, which plays fine for me.

However, I just built a desktop PC.
It's an AMD Phenom II X6 1050T Thuban (6 cores, 2.8GHz), 4 gigs of DDR3-1600 (which for some dumb reason is set to 1333MHz in the BIOS, and I don't know how to fix it). Graphics are motherboard integrated (although I have ordered a Radeon HD 5750, in a "fuck it, I make enough money to afford a bit nicer PC" spur of the moment decision, which should arrive monday)

I installed it, installed Win7 Pro x64 (same as on my laptop), and TF2 runs like shit.
e reccomended settings for my PC were pretty much cranked to the maximum except for antialiasing.
I turned every setting down besides resolution (I want to play at native 1920x1200) and multicore rendering (which is supposed to speed things up). I get like 12 fps, sometimes as high as 18, but it is noticeably choppy.

I know that the HD 4200 is the limiting component, but I am having a hard time believing that that is the only problem. TF2 isn't a new game, and even tho it's integrated motherboard graphics, I don't understand why my 3 year old laptop is so much better in TF2. The Quadro FX570M isn't exactly a powerhouse, but when set to significantly higher settings it gets double the framerate as the HD 4200. And it's a 3 year old workstation integrated mobile graphics card.

Any ideas?

SM3 of 1645
CPU of 1808

New PC gets 1819 score

Reading some more... maybe it is just the extreme suckage of the Radeon HD4200.

I know I was expecting a lot from ATI when I hoped that their current standard integrated graphics were at least on par with the graphics from a three year old business, non-gaming laptop. Hopefully the Radeon HD 5750 should tear shit up. And my CPU seems to be kicking ass, at least.

5750 is in the top 30 cards. It should rock.

4200 is ranked like 500. ew. Worse than the FX570 in your laptop.

I'm just shocked. I know not to get my hopes up for integrated graphics, but I figured that with low/medium settings, they would be able to play games that use the Source engine, originally developed in 2004.

TF2 has nice graphics, but when you talk about those GPU-wrecking beasts of games, it is far from the top of the list. I'm shocked that even with minimal eyecandy, it can't even become playable.

I'm very glad now that I did my uninformed spur-of-the-moment purchase of the HD 5750. I was up in the air over whether i needed the extra power, since I was naively assuming that the HD 4200 would be able to play older games like TF2 fine, and I should probably wait for prices to come down or new games to come out before upgrading it.

Well, that did it. Increased my score by an order of magnitude.

14709 3dmarks
sm2 of 5625
sm3 of 6444
CPU was 5155

It's the card I run. It hasn't failed me yet. It's even good at video work.

TF2 is good on it. Most settings cranked, and I play at huge resolution 1920x1200, and I get well over 100 fps just running around, and still like a minimum of 30-40fps in intense combat.

I promised myself I wouldn't build a new gaming machine until after I graduated......but by then I hope people will still be playing TF2.
