From what I've read on Slashdot, it's basically Vista SP2. Though I heard it feels very responsive/fast.

Has anyone tried it?

That's weird, I'm downloading Windows 7 beta right now. I'm no fan of vista, they screwed over the business deployment of Vista early. 95% of my clients that use Windows are still on XP, I have one client on Windows 2000, but only 3 that are using any Vista and those have less than 20% Vista.

We shall see about 7, but it's already pissed me off with the name.
First they started naming Windows in version sequence, (1,2,3), non-windows (OS2), then years (95, 9Cool, letters (NT), back to years (2000), then quasi year/name (millenium), then letters again (XP), a stupid name (Vista), now a version number? Version 7? wtf? fire the product manager.

Here's a brief history of the Windows versions over the years:

Windows 1.0
Windows 2.0
Windows 2.x
OS/2 (wtf?)
Windows 3.0
Windows NT
Windows 3.1
Windows NT 3.1
Windows for Workgroups 3.1
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT Server
Windows 95
Windows 95A
Windows 95B
Windows 95B(USB) not shitting you
Windows 95C
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation; Windows NT 4.0 Server; Server, Ent Ed; etc.
Windows 98
Windows 98 SE (Second Edition)
Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Adv Server, etc. etc.
Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Windows XP:
Home Edition
Professional Edition
Windows XP Media Center Editions, (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005)
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, TPCE 2005
Windows XP Starter Edition (only available in developing countries)
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
Windows Server 2003:
Web Edition (32-bit)
Standard Edition (32 and 64-bit)
Enterprise Edition (32 and 64-bit)
Datacenter Edition (64-bit)
Small Business Server (32-bit)
Storage Server (OEM channel only)
Windows Home Server {NEVER SEEN THIS}
Windows Vista:
Starter (only available in developing countries)
Home Basic
Home Premium
Business
Enterprise
Ultimate
Windows Server 2008
Windows Version 7

I have enough plastic in Windows and AOL trial CDs to build a freaking raft!

I went to their website and looked at their demo of the program. Looks just like Mac OS X: Panther

I'm gonna install it right after I feel comfortable enough to grow my C partition with gparted and attempt a triple boot setup with XP, ubuntu and 7 beta. Probably will need a lot of hard liquor to really believe that's a good idea.

LOL - for many years I contemplated tri-boot, er, for at least as many years as Vista's been out. A lot of people claim to have it now. I went ahead and did Vista/XP on my tablet. I gave Vista a bonafide try, and honestly, it was a waste of time. Now getting that dual boot OFF is a huge hassle :-/

Massive-

Not to say that Microsoft's naming techniques are any good, but just to clarify, OS/2 is a completely different operating system co-created by Microsoft & IBM that grew out of MS-DOS system calls, and is similar to Unix. Nothing to do with Windows. Also, they didn't just decide to switch to letters for NT, which is a code name for the completely new operating system architecture that allowed full 32-bit processing. Windows 2000, XP, Server '03, Vista, and probably some others are derived from NT. Not sure about 7, but I wouldn't be surprised. It represented a fundamental change from the way Win 95/98 functioned.

I certainly don't feel like counting, but supposedly Windows 7 is Microsoft's seventh major kernel revision. I bet they realized naming operating systems with a year made them seem outdated very early, so they gave that up. I do agree that Millenium/Vista could have had better names associated with them, but big deal...

I'm just glad MS seems to have produced a winner with Win 7. It'd be great if they offered it at a discount to Vista users. Microsoft could really earn some brownie points with the whole popularity struggle if they offered a cheap upgrade. <hopes> Very Happy Vista's been working out really well for me (like it a lot better than XP), but Win 7 looks quite kickass.

Using it and enjoying it. I've been longing for RC1 though, which is rumored to release in May as I still am using build 7000 which has a few nitpicks here and there. Only times I have had bsod on W7 is when I run out of memory it seems (only have 2 GB).
