This will improve the performance of your computer by re-organizing teh files on your harddrive as well as checking for and cleaning errors. Note: This process will take a LONG TIME if you have not done it in a while, or if you have never done it. You may want to do it overnight.

These instructions are for Windows XP (perhaps Windows 2000)

The first thing you want to do is a full integral scandisk that will clean the surface of the disk and do lots of fun things. You CAN NOT go to Start Menu > Program Files > accessories > system tools > scandisk to do this - that's just a light read-only surface scan that doesn't really do much.

Before you shut your PC off for the night, do this:

Hit START, go to RUN

Type CMD

In the prompt, type

Code:

chkdsk /R

In the prompt, you will see the message

Code:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y into the prompt and hit enter. Instead of shutting your comp off for the night, reboot it and let scandisk do its own thing. w00t.

When that's all done when you wake up, reboot again and while the comp is booting, START TAPPING THE F8 KEY. When the boot menu thing comes up, select SAFE MODE (no networking/command prompt). Your screen resolution will look like shit because it won't load any drivers or any programs. You won't be able to access the internet, but if you need to, just reboot and let it boot Windows automatically.

Once you're in SAFE MODE, go to Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

Select your C: drive and press "Defragment"

Let it sit and don't do anything, you'll piss it off. As I said, this will take one hell of a long time. GL HF. As I said, in order to get back into wegular windowz with all your drivers and fun stuff, just reboot and let it sit like normal. If you have any issues, post Razz

Always defrag after you do a cleanup run and delete big files.

PWNED!!!! Twisted Evil

i did defraged last week, it only took me 8 hours even though it was the first time, and i have 580GB of hard drive (about 40% is used now)

i have never done the scan disk thing though........

is that just to help keep the hard drive healthy, or is it performence related? like defrag?

Scandisk checks the surface of the disk for errors and corrects (sometimes has to delete) them.

I use Spinrite by Gibson Research - it costs $89 but will save your arse if your hard drive is actually in the process of failing. Once you have it though, you can use it for disk maintenance - and it blows scandisk / chkdsk away.

Some of you more resourceful types could probly find it cheaper too Wink

If nothing else, follow Wang's solid advice and you'll be thanking him down the road at some point.

i dont know what it is, but when i was building my comp, there was something in BIOS that i enabled that constantly scans the HDD's when ever they are seeeking and also tels you if they find anything. i dont know what it is, or how it works, but i think it is the same as that scan disk thing. exept that this is working all the time, and only slows it down about 5%. (the hard drive accses speed that it) (not even notisable)

Your probably referring to S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) SMART actually only monitors the drive and doesn't heal it in any way. But if you don't backup very often, I would recommend using it to give yourself a "heads-up" at the onset of the inevitable drive trouble.

Two things I'd like to add to this post:

It's good to back your shit up, but not all of it - just important docs / memoirs /resumes et cetera. So do you really need expensive RAID systems or unlimited online backup? Only if your time is that precious. I recommend MozyHome Free, which gives you 2GB of space and a small client program that backs up the files you select on a regular basis. IIRC it works for at least two computers.

https://mozy.com/registration/free

Probably one of the best disk defragmenters available is Defraggler. It's free, and made by the same folks who brought us Crap Cleaner. It is super useful.

http://www.defraggler.com/

Let me know if you have anything to recommend, because I am sort of out of the loop, but these are Wang-approved.
