So I recently endevoured into installing Linux (Ubuntu specifically) and I am trying to get my graphics card (Nvidia Geforce 5950 ultra) to display on the TV viz an S-video cable. Now that being said, I have not installed any drivers yet for the card, Here's my problem:

when using a monitor and the s-video running to a TV both work perfectly fine until the Ubuntu login screen appears, and then the(television) screen trips out and goes lots of patchy colors on me however the monitor works fine. When I just use The S-video the screen just goes black when the login screen should appear.

Is this a drivers issue? If so how do I install stuff on Linux (Ubuntu) I'm baffled. :/

Could it just be a bad card?

I'm sure your card is fine, dude. My first guess would be the issue is with the TV since I've had terrible luck with issues like snowiness when trying to hook up a computer to one. My second guess would be that there are probably some linux specific drives that you could probably find on the nvidia site somewhere.

For installing the drivers, try this.

First figure out your proc architecture. In most cases its i386 or x86.

Code:
uname -r

This will give you an output with the kernel version and your proc architecture at the end.
Code:

sudo apt-get install linux-architecture

Replace architecture with the one you found with uname.

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx

Back up your old xorg config just in case. :>

Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup

Now enable the drivers

Code:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then make a link for your settings on the app menu.

Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/NVIDIA-Settings.desktop

And in this file, type

Code:
[Desktop Entry] Name=NVIDIA Settings Comment=NVIDIA X Server Settings Exec=nvidia-settings Icon= StartupNotify=true Terminal=false Type=Application Categories=Application;System;

Save the file and then log out and press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.

If that messes things up, try restarting the comp.

BTW is this comp connected to the internet? You need to connect it so you can apt-get the drivers.
